It's Not OSFA

Writer: Lauren Register, MHLauren Register, MH

We've all been there. Day one of our new health path and it's just NOT FUN. Sure, new habits are difficult to form and take discipline...but have you ever felt like what you're trying to implement just doesn't suit you at all? A parenting moment the other day reminded me of an oftentimes looked over element to sustainable wellness. It's not one size fits all.

Maybe you're not quite there, and simply need encouragement to keep the course. If that's you, let me share with you how a recent parenting moment reminded me of a key factor of creating not only an attainable but sustainable track to wellness.

I've got a wonderfully inquisitive and helpful toddler. Recently, I've been researching how to educate this person I've been entrusted with. Currently I'm fumbling through trying to find what feels right and fits our parenting style best. Not hard right? Something that sparked my interest is this thing, idea really called a "Morning Basket". If you're not familiar with the term, it's basically a routine that you go through in the mornings. It involves scripture readings, music and art. I'll give you the short version; my toddler was not impressed. In fact, he acted dare I say?..... BORED! I know, you totally saw that coming. My routine was perfect, absolutely age and stage appropriate. Plenty of hands on activities to bring to life our memory work. I missed it though . That one vitally important element of success. His heart. Where he is at as his own person. Right now he's not wired for coloring and pasting, counting beads, etc. Sticker books or paints hold no fascination for him. He'll be off finding something else to do in minutes. Show him a task to complete or a way to help and he's there 100%. It sparks such joy and focus in him. I missed this entirely. While mulling over my "failed" morning basket, I was reminded of something. {Cue, grumpy growls and messy bun mama waving good bye to her serene morning. }

It is the same with wellness.

You can research and fabricate, crafting the perfect plan. Day one comes, and you fall flat on your face...or even month one ends and you're still spinning. Oftentimes in our eagerness in setting our plans for wellness, we forget to factor in ourselves. We set up steps that while great on paper, or even research-proven, are polar opposite to the way we're wired. I've got news for you, we're all wired differently, and it's not by accident either. It's quite purposefully done, and purpose-filled when we pursue those differences with God as our guide. Exercise routines illustrate this well. For instance, most of us don't really jump up at the idea of "working out". A lot of this has to do with not taking the time to find something we actually enjoy doing. Then we get super frustrated when we are even less motivated, have fewer results, or worse, get injured. There is value in researching yourself and how you tick before jumping head first into some plan built for someone else entirely. God has put such different giftings, strengths and weaknesses in all of us. These help us as we relate to all parts of life. Let Him show you how it can relate to your wellness journey.

So take a tip from this overachiever; don't forget to factor in the YOU, when it comes to YOUR wellness journey.
