Balance.
Sit with that word. See what comes to mind. Weights and measures. A balance beam. Maybe you're seeing certain words that define what balance means to you. Maybe you're visualizing what a balanced life looks like. Now, lets erase those images, and start fresh, all while keeping that word, balance, in your mind.
As humans, we are created to worship. It's hard-wired into us to bow to something, to identify with something, someone, some behavior. We crave ritual and rhythm. You can argue all you want but everyone's life in some form or fashion is guided by an inner need to have a center focus. Those of us who believe in a divine Creator, believe said Creator designed us accordingly to worship and commune with Him. To let Him set the beat to the rhythm of our life. To allow us to co-labor, co-create and live fully in Him, because of His love and Son.
Any believer will also tell you, we are not immune to idolatry. Even knowing and believing the truth, we are in a fight to keep God at His right place as King and center of our lives.
Let me fill you in on something I've found to be true in myself, which is why it's my goal to keep it in mind for you on your wellness journey. Your health can quickly become an idol; something you obsess over and bow to over anything else. Everything in you strives to just be healthy and stay that way. Mind you I didn't mention that wellness can be an idol, because wellness done holistically as a believer will be centered around God. Your health mindset will come from that place instead of you trying to bring Him into something.
This brings us back to balance.
Balance in health circles says eating a donut as a snack will not count as a failure on your path to cleaner eating. It's okay to sleep in one morning. While these are not untrue statements, imbalance usually follows. Imbalance is why most people end up running out of steam with their health goals. All the expectations, guidelines and restrictions become suffocating. There is another side affect of imbalance though. Obsession. Obsessing over health, being healthy. Following all the guidelines all the rules, compulsively. Keep counting, keep restricting, keep running. Keep controlling. Being controlling and being out of control are two extremes of imbalance. This tendency toward imbalance is rooted in our need to be God. All those expectations and controlling of circumstances and behaviors are done in order to achieve perfection, or our own form of god-ness. Notice, I didn't say godliness.
So where does a balanced wellness mindset come from? It comes from an understanding of what we've already discussed. Knowing your "why". As believers though, our WHO is of vital importance when it comes to our wellness journey. WHO are you doing this for or more specifically unto? His word says do everything as unto the Lord. We are to be good stewards of all He has given us. Because all that we have is because of Him. When He is the center and you're listening to what He has for you, what He says about you, there is much healing that can be done, well beyond the physical. Breaking through our barriers of self-loathing and self-worth issues can only be done with Jesus at the center.
At Restoring Wellness we work with our clients to help them achieve a renewed and properly aligned mindset when it comes to health and wellness. My heart is that you walk in joy and the fullness of Christ, first. Then from that place, cultivate balance in stewarding all He has given you in regard to your health and total wellness.
